PRESS STATEMENT
Athens Pride is not just a celebration of visibility. It is also a reminder that the rights,
safety and dignity of LGBTQI+ people are not a given.
At a time when LGBTQI+ people, and especially trans, non-binary and intersex people,
continue to face discrimination, exclusion and limited visibility at an institutional and
societal level, taking to the streets comes as a necessity, and as a response to any
attempt to invalidate our identities. The Athens Pride Parade is a space for advocacy,
celebration, remembrance and collective action with the message: Our rights are non-
negotiable.
Athens Pride, however, is first and foremost about stories.
The story…
of a refugee who manages to feel safe;
of a single mother who supports her child;
of a sex worker who demands equal rights to work with safety and dignity;
of a trans woman who is still not tired of demanding the obvious;
of a couple of men who finally became a family;
of a non-binary youth from the countryside who attends Athens Pride for the first time;
of an intersex person who saw themselves on TV for the first time;
of a lesbian who comes out on center stage.
Dozens, hundreds, thousands of stories. Stories that are yours too.
Some stories may seem personal, but in reality they concern us all, everyone and
everything. Because the right to live with safety, dignity and freedom does not only
concern LGBTQI+ people, it concerns society as a whole. Every time one person is
excluded, afraid or forced to hide, it concerns us. And every time a life becomes freer,
more visible and safer, society as a whole evolves. That’s why Athens Pride is not about
“some other people.” It’s about us. It’s about you.
So, we invite you to share your stories with us and become one with the thousands of
other experiences, hopes and demands.
Because this is what Athens Pride is all about: IT’S ABOUT YOU.
